The Acacia Quartet | ensemble

In eleven years Acacia Quartet have won great respect for their versatile and inventive programs.

Acacia have recorded twelve albums, with Blue Silence earning a nomination for an APRA-AMCOS Art Music ‘Award for Excellence’.

Acacia are passionate about supporting Australian composers, working with young musicians, and sharing their love of music with audiences of all ages. Their performances feature regularly on radio stations around the world.

Acacia’s engagements in Australia include the Sydney Opera House, City Recital Hall Sydney, Melbourne Recital Hall, as well as extensive touring through regional NSW and Victoria.

Acacia had their international debut in Vancouver, Canada at the Roundhouse in June 2016. The following year, Acacia Quartet were invited by the Christine Raphael Foundation to give their European debut, where they performed concerts in Berlin and recorded a CD with three string quartets by Günter Raphael.

A new CD with quartets by Mozart, Chance and Dvorak will be released in March 2022 through Move Records.

Vladimir Gorbach | guitar

Internationally acclaimed guitarist Vladimir Gorbach has captivated audiences across Europe, the United States, Japan and his native country of Russia.

His international success began with the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation “Live Music Now” artist outreach program in Germany. He then went on to win many international guitar competitions and prizes in Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Greece and the USA alongside performing concert tours throughout Europe, North and South America. He had appearances in some of the prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall in New York, Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo and Laeizshalle in Hamburg.

Vladimir has published a book of solo guitar arrangements of the Renaissance lute music with Mel Bay Publications (USA) and recorded for the largest recording label Naxos.

Vladimir is a senior lecturer in guitar at The University of Sydney, Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

 


Bridget Bolliger | flute

Australian-Swiss flautist Bridget Bolliger made her solo début with the Sydney Symphony performing Ibert’s Flute Concerto at the age of 15. She relocated to Switzerland for her tertiary studies graduating with a Masters Degree in
Performance from the Basel Music Academy under Professor Peter-Lukas Graf. Bridget then embarked upon a busy and varied career in Europe and South America appearing as soloist and chamber musician with many leading international orchestras and ensembles.

Her countless performances of Mozart’s Flute and Harp Concerto have involved collaborations with some of the world’s most renowned harpists – including Marielle Norman and Elena Zaniboni. She has held Principal Flute positions with the St Gallen Symphony Orchestra and the Sao Paulo Symphony. She has appeared as guest Principal Flute and soloist with the Basel Symphony, Lugano Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia Zürich, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, and Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Upon her return to Sydney in 2004, Bridget became a passionate advocate of Australian music and frequently performed at the Huntington Estate Music Festival and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. She was the founding Director of the New Sydney Wind Quintet, spanning over a decade performing countless concerts supported by Musica Viva. She has been the Founding Artistic Director of the Sydney Chamber Music Festival since 2008.

In 2014, Bridget formed a key musical partnership with pianist Andrew West; in 2016, they gavetheir début recital in the Utzon Room, Sydney Opera House, and collaborated on Bridget’s latest album, Timeless, released by Austrian Gramophone. Her earlier recordings received unanimous acclaim from celebrated music journals such as Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine, and Limelight Magazine. These recordings include Quintopia, The Laughing Moon (by Ross Edwards) and Dancing Shadows (the complete music for flute and piano by Miriam Hyde, released by Cala Records).

Bridget is a dedicated flute teacher, has given masterclasses in universities in NSW and Victoria,
and maintains an international profile through her teaching work around the world

Karina Moss-Hollands | violin

Karina Moss-Hollands (violin) is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and completed her Master of Music Degree in 1993, majoring in violin performance and teaching.

She is principal violinist and artistic director of Concertante Ensemble, the Central Coast’s own chamber orchestra, and Concertmaster of Symphony Central Coast. She also gives regular solo recitals and chamber music concerts there.

She is Head of Programme, Strings at the Central Coast Conservatorium and has been a violin teacher, chamber music coach and student string orchestra conductor there for the past 25 years.

 


Jacqui Cronin | viola

Violist, Jacqueline Cronin, has performed widely throughout Australia with numerous ensembles and orchestras, including the Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Opera Australia Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria. Most recently she has appeared as Guest Associate Principal Viola of the Opera Australia Orchestra. Jacqueline is also an active chamber musician, performing regularly in festivals across Australia, and with the Sydney Omega Ensemble, Sonus Piano Quartet and the Seraphim Trio.

Jacqueline holds a Bachelor of Music with distinction from the Canberra School of Music and a Masters of Music Performance from the University of Melbourne. In 1999 and 2000, Jacqueline held full scholarships at the Australian National Academy of Music, studying with various Australian and international violists.

In 2002, Jacqueline was a recipient of the Ian Potter Foundation which enabled further studies overseas. Jacqueline was also selected to take part in the Sydney Symphony Fellowship program.

 


Tim Nankervis | cello

Cellist, Timothy Nankervis, is a member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has won numerous awards for cello solo, and for chamber music as a member of the acclaimed Seraphim Trio. As an active chamber musician, Tim has performed extensively with Seraphim Trio nationally and internationally. He also performs regularly as a guest artist with various ensembles.

Tim has performed widely throughout Australia as a soloist, and has broadcast regularly for the ABC and MBS-FM radio stations across the country. He has performed the Beethoven Triple Concerto and Brahms Double Concerto with orchestras in Sydney and Queensland, and he has performed as soloist with Orchestra Victoria, playing Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations. Tim performs regularly with the Australian World Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and he has performed casually with the Melbourne, Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras.

He has taught cello and chamber music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and tutors regularly for Sydney Youth Orchestra and Australian Youth Orchestra.

Tim completed his Bachelor of Music degree in Sydney with Lois Simpson and graduated from Melbourne University with a Masters of Music degree with Nelson Cooke. He has also studied at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne, and in London with William Pleeth and Raphael Wallfisch.

 


Frank Celata | clarinet

Francesco Celata joined the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 1993 as Associate Principal Clarinet. He has appeared as soloist on several occasions, including performances of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue and Riffs, Krommer’s Double Clarinet Concertoa concerto written for him by Gordon Kerry.

More recently he appeared as soloist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, under David Robertson at The National Centre for Performing Arts in Beijing performing the virtuoso concerto for Clarinet and Chamber Orchestra, Gnarly Buttons by American composer John Adams. He has also appeared as soloist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and the Auckland Philharmonia.

On several occasions between 2003 and 2009 he appeared with the London Symphony Orchestra as guest Principal Clarinet, performing on international tours and recordings. More recently he appeared as guest Principal Clarinet with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London touring internationally and recording with them. Frank plays Principal Clarinet with the Australian World Orchestra, comprising 110 of Australia’s leading musicians drawn from 47 orchestras around the world. He also serves on the board of the orchestra.

Frank has performed under many of the world’s leading conductors including Lorin Maazel, Ricardo Muti, Sir Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Charles Dutoit and Myun-whun Chung.

Frank is the founding member of one of Sydney’s leading chamber ensembles, the Sydney Soloists, consisting of Principal Players from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. The group has performed in numerous live national broadcasts for the ABC and has also recorded for them.

He is also a dedicated teacher, and since 1994 has taught clarinet at the Sydney Conservatorium, where he is a Lecturer in Clarinet. He has taught many students who have gone on to leading positions in Australia and around the world. He has given masterclasses at the Shanghai Conservatorium, Trinity College in London, The Australian National Academy of Music and was for several years, the Artistic Director of the Australian International Symphony Orchestra Institute (AISOI). In 2013 he joined the staff of the Conservatorium of Music in Hobart for three years as Lecturer in Orchestral and Chamber Music where he headed the Woodwind department.
